[caption id="attachment_165" align="alignleft" width="225" caption="On Sale Now!"]The one and only[/caption]       Sorry, the sale is over. Check back on March 11 when we will be having a very special sale in commemoration of the anniversary of the earthquake and tsunami in Fukushima.   Highwater Filters is celebrating our very first year of sales on Friday, February 24. We want to invite you to join us in commemorating this milestone by offering you the lowest price on the web for the Katadyn Pocket. $250! I've checked around. The lowest I can find is on ebay for $264.99 (with free shipping) so I am going to set this very special anniversary sale price at $250! [caption id="attachment_1204" align="alignright" width="149" caption="One year and counting..."][/caption]   This sale ends Friday so don't delay! We so appreciate all the folks who helped us make our first year a big success. It's hard to believe it's been a year since our first sale. The memories are vivid as we launched the site that day a year ago and then watched as.... nothing happened. At least not right away. And then the horrible earthquake and tsunami in Japan struck and turned our world upside down. On March 11, I woke in the middle of the night and could not sleep. I then did something I don't normally do in the wee hours. I went online. And it was in the early morning of March 11 (or probably March 12) that I learned of the tragedy in Japan. I didn't realize how catastrophic it was at the time. I didn't realize how it would impact my business. But when people around the world witnessed the devastating aftermath of the tsunami, we collectively realized our vulnerabilities. And access to clean drinking water is a priority for people in a disaster. As the events in the wake of Fukushima unfolded were realized, orders for the Katadyn Pocket soared. The manufacturers in Switzerland could not keep up on orders. Their North American headquarters in Minnesota were backed up with thousands of orders. And I happened to be well stocked with the Pocket. I've continued to keep our inventory well stocked as I watched Katadyn increase their prices over and over again. The manufacturer's retail price was $269 when I first started my business. They list for $369. today. That is a hefty increase and I've begun to notice other resellers dropping the Pocket from their product offerings. I may end up doing the same after my stash is depleted. Look for another sale on the first anniversary of the Japan earthquake. That will be a more somber day, but let us not forget the victims of the terrible tragedy a year ago. So many lives lost and so much damage to the people of Japan. My heart goes out to them. Thanks for stopping by! To purchase the Katadyn Pocket for the low, low price of $250 please visit our Highwater Filters store.

Silver lining in Supreme Court ruling on Internet Sales Tax.
Silver lining in Supreme Court ruling on Internet Sales Tax.

Last week's Supreme Court ruling (South Dakota v. Wayfair, No. 17-494) may change the way people shop. Large internet companies will now be compelled to charge sales tax on all internet sales in the U.S.

There's a silver lining in the decision. The ruling should encourage consumers to shop in local brick and mortar stores and to purchase from small internet stores like Highwater Filters.

Many people don't trust the water that comes out of their taps. Should they trust the water that comes out of plastic bottles? Not at all.

Nestle, Aquafina, Aqua, Dasani, Evian and other major brands are selling water that does not require testing. And it stands to reason that water sitting in plastic bottles can become contaminated with chemicals that leach from plastic. The sense of security that many consumers feel from bottled water is misguided. That water is not always what you might believe. In fact, more times than not, it isn't.

In a ruling that could have far-reaching consequences for communities that add fluoride to their municipal drinking water, a court in California denied the EPA's request for a protection order that would limit the information courts can view when considering evidence of risks to human health and the environment.
