Water Distillation Use
Water distillation is a long-used water treatment method that can help remove many contaminants from water, including chemicals, heavy metals, salts, and other contaminants that may not be addressed by standard water filters.
The Vortex is designed for non-electric distillation when used with a compatible pressure cooker and a heat source capable of boiling water, such as a camp fire, gas stove, electric stove, rocket stove, or wood stove.
Compatibility Note
The Vortex is designed to be used with a pressure cooker that has an external stem valve on the lid. Not all pressure cookers have this type of valve.
Compatible examples mentioned in the original product information include:
- Modified Magefesa pressure cookers sold separately by Highwater Filters
- Magefesa Star R pressure cookers with the correct valve type
- Vintage Presto stainless steel pressure cookers with a compatible valve

We tried to find a stainless steel pressure cooker made in America, but found that none exist. So we found a great quality cooker made in Spain by Magefesa. We've modified the lids with our exclusive Vortex adaptor to increase the flow rate and to make connection a snap. We have several different sizes to choose from. If you want to use your own cooker, just make sure it has the external valve that used to be standard on most pressure cookers but now are much harder to find. The Magefesa Star R has the right kind of valve. Vintage Presto stainless steel pressure cookers, made in the USA, have a compatible valve. We will try to compile a list of other brands that can be used in tandem with the Vortex system.
For a low-cost pressure cooker check the web. There are reasonably priced cookers with a compatible valve.
Flow Rate Info
Flow rate depends on heat intensity. Tests conducted got results of over 1 gallon an hour when used in conjunction with the Vortex adaptor and high heat. Without Vortex adaptor the results were .62 gallons per hour.
